What Deanna Read #44: September 2019

Oh my gosh! How slack am I? I'm so late with this post and it's all because we got home from our US trip then went straight into the city for work meetings and concerts. We didn't get home till days after and then I crashed. Jet lag is no joke, y'all. I was so tired. I'm still tired. As I'm writing this, I'm about three or four hours behind on my day because I slept in this morning. It wasn't even intentional. I just didn't wake up!! I was stunned when I looked at the clock this morning when I finally opened my eyes. It was LATE! But, hey, September was a pretty good reading month. I tried to get as much reading in as I could even though I was away. October, on the other hand, is not going so well on the reading front.

Here's what I read for the month.

I'm surprised by the number of books I read in September but upon reflection a lot of the books were quite short.

I decided to try to overcome some of my prejudices regarding what I always called trashy romances, smut, really, and read a few of the well known authors who specialise in them. Not much plot or character development, a ton of sex. There were a few standouts. The Billionaire's Gamble by Penny Wylder was good. BB Hamel surprised me with some great character development in Five Mountain Daddies.

Mate by Trent Evans was the first (dark erotic) romance I've ever read that was written by a man. I was surprised to find out it was written by a guy and upon reflection could see some of that in the writing but otherwise it was a hot, sexy read. Not sure if it's for everyone.

As usual, I continued reading books from the Planet Athion world with Marissa Farrar's Bait. There were some rather shocking and quite dark moments in the book. You have been warned.

And of course, it's not a month of reading without a Serena Akeroyd book since she releases at least a book a month and I enjoy her writing. This time it's the second book in her motorcycle club duet, Their Saint. Very emotional and poignant. MC romances are not usually my thing but I did enjoy Ms Akeroyd's take on the trope.

Finally, I can't leave out the fact that I've started a reread of the Harry Potter books. Not romance, but man, JK Rowling is a brillaint writer. And upon the second reading, knowing what I know, after reading articles, watching the movies, and diving into some commentaries about the books, it brings a whole different level of understanding and appreciation to the books and the level of depth and development Ms Rowling put into the stories. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was a fantastic read. I read the British version though which is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

As I review the reading list for the month, it's been an eclectic reading month but an enjoyable one.

That's it from me. What did you read for this last month? Do leave a comment and let me know.

Stay tuned for Helen's books next.
