Manview: Promise Not To Tell (Cutler, Sutter and Salinas #2) by Jayne Ann Krentz

Welcome to another Manview. For those of you who are new to Manviews, these are reviews of romance novels specifically from a man's perspective, the reader today is my very own Steve. You can find previous Manviews here.

Surprisingly, my impression of this book was extremely different from Steve's. While I adored the conflict and damaged aspect of Virginia and Cabot's relationship, it didn't work as well for Steve. I'm pretty sure that's a Manview. You can read my review here.

Promise Not To Tell by Jayne Ann Krentz

ManviewIn one or two sentences can you sum up your overall impression of this book and how you feel about it?

As usual, Krentz was brilliant with the plot twists and suspense, but the hero and heroine annoyed me and bogged down the pace.

What did you think of Virginia and Cabot?

I kept comparing them to Max and Charlotte (who I loved!) in the previous book in the series unfortunately, and Virginia and Cabot fell short! I recognized that both Virginia and Cabot were damaged from thinking they would die as children in a fire, but the same thing happened to Max and he seemed to get past it better. The pace of Cabot and Virginia opening up to each other and the mind games they played with themselves was tedious at times.

Do you think Virginia and Cabot's shared childhood experience helped bring them closer together or not?

I think it helped them understand, open and accept each other, so yes. Neither of them seemed to have ever let anyone inside their mind, let alone their heart previously.

Did you find the romance between Virginia and Cabot convincing?

Yes, I just did not find it enjoyable or one I could relate to.

What did you think of Cabot's conspiracy theory leanings when it came to the cult leader?

Plausible and worth pursuing. It wasn’t just Cabot, but all of them that were running with conspiracy theories and this was valid given how crazed and heartless the cult leader was.

How did you enjoy the suspense that was built around the story?

As always with Krentz, this book had good suspense and resolved at a good pace, with some great plot twists along the way.

What did you think of the plot twist at the end of the story? Did it surprise you?

It did not surprise me once I read it, but it did catch me by surprise which I liked.

Was there anything in the story that stood out to you?

Yes, the generational relationship between Cabot and his family and the difficulties involved when a grandparent hates the decisions made by a daughter (or son) and then the grandchild is hurt by that. I enjoyed Cabot working through those relationships far better than I did him working through his relationship with Virginia!

Will you be reading the last book in this series?

Of course. I love a good thriller and want to see how the third ‘brother’ turned out.

What's your next read?

Running Blind by Gwen Hernandez

  2. Great review, as always. I was eager to read it, because I read the book. I had read Deanna's review and I had to go back and read my own review because I couldn't remember the story! I thought it was ho-hum. Steve, you must read Ranger Defender by Angi Morgan. It is AMAZING.
