Manview: Rough & Tumble (Men of Haven #1) by Rhenna Morgan

Welcome to another Manview. For those of you who are new to Manviews, these are reviews of romance novels specifically from a man's perspective, the reader today is my very own Steve. You can find previous Manviews here.

I'm so bummed about the fact that Steve didn't enjoy this book. I loved this story and everyone I talked to who has read it has loved it too but we are all women, so be warned, this is really a Manview y'all. If you want a positive review for this book, read mine.

How many flames for the heat rating?

Cannot answer as I quit 8% the way into the book and there was none yet; only mind-perving going on.

In one or two sentences can you sum up your overall impression of this book and how you feel about it?

I hated it. I can see why some may get into it, but the concept of the men's club did not work for me, and the men were more tribal than noble.

What did you think of Viv and Jace?

First of all, who the hell is called Jace? What a jerk-off name. And to have his identity revolve around 24x7 sucking on a toothpick was not my image of what a romance novel boyfriend should be. And his attraction to Viv was that she might be wild, nothing else. Wanting to bonk the wild one was not the type of attraction I was expecting the hero to focus on.

Viv was more likable trying to help her sister out. The characters may have evolved to be more likeable during the remainder of the book, but the books needs to have something to make me continue. I wanted to quit at 6% and could not read another word by 8%.

What did you think of the brotherhood that Jace has created with his brothers and the motto they live by?

I thought it was tribal and self-serving. Not exactly the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Just a bunch of guys who looked out for each other, not society as a whole. And the fact they needed each other, made me think each was weak on his own.

You did not finish this book. Can you say why?

I think I have said so above. The story line did not have anything going for it, the characters and their relationships were unlikeable, and that damn toothpick and name! I just felt if you cannot get me to 10% - 25% the way through, you have failed as an author. I can envision some women who like their males to be ultra-alpha and insensitive to boot may enjoy this book, but not Mr. (sensitive) Manview!

Was there anything you did enjoy about the book?

No. The closest any scene came was when Viv's sister threw up on some guys shoes (if I remember correctly). Projectile vomit was the highlight of this book for me!

What's your next read?

Not sure. I would like another Australian historical romance novel I think. Anything really that does not have a toothpick sucking, "I want her 'cause she's wild," bar owner named Jace type of hero!

  1. Awesome! The idea of a toothpick-sucking alphahole is gross! I'm glad I did not buy this book!

    1. I actually really enjoyed the book because of how alpha male Jace was, but I could have done without the toothpick sucking.

  4. YIKES! I'm okay with the name Jace, and it sounds pretty cool, but I'm not sure I can wrap my arms around a man group.(lol) I can't put my finger on it, but something about a bunch of men together being the focus versus the women, just seems a little out there. Don't get me wrong, alpha men are amazing, but just not as a group. Hugs...

    1. Yeah, I have never seen Steve react so strongly (negatively) to a book before. I thought he would like it and the concept of the brotherhood but I was wrong.
