Scorpius Rising by Rebecca Zanetti

Rebecca Zanetti has created a scary world where the apocalypse is brought about by biology rather than zombies, with an unseen killer that spread and devour the world with ruthless efficiency. It is both chilling and fascinating.

I got sucked into reading this story because my friend Bambi (yes, her again! she's a bad influence!) was reading the first book in the series Mercury Striking and she DNF'ed it. I'm always curious when she DNF's a book because she and I have very similar and yet very different tastes in books. Funnily enough, quite often, a book she will DNF would be a book I'd enjoy. Odd reason to pick up a book, I know, but there it is.

After reading Julie Rowe's Biological Response Team series, I've come to really enjoy stories about biological warfare. They are at once fascinating and terrifying. With this particular bacteria, their origins are alien, from outer space, rather than man made, so it's something Deacan and Nora have never encountered before and have their hands full battling, on top of rekindling a romance which never really had any closure.

I loved Deacan right from the start, from the moment he uttered the first words in the story. He's everything I love about an alpha male soldier. Strong, commanding, demanding and sexy as hell. Deacan is a fighter and after he lost Nora many years ago, he thinks he needs to be a different man for her, in order to win her back, but he is what he is, and throughout this story, we see him battle with himself only to finally acknowledge who he truly is and accept himself for who he is. It was a fascinating internal battle to watch because it was so masculine, and let's face it, masculine is sexy.

Nora is a strong, confident woman who has fundamental issues with the government and the way the government goes about doing things. She doesn't agree with their tactics but the scientist in her is curious and wants to find a cure for the pandemic which is spreading across the country. She also has trouble with who Deacan is and needs to come to terms with their differences to make their relationship work again. Fortunately, Deacan is persistent and stubborn, and he wears down her defenses. It was wonderful to see her finally accept Deacan as he is and for him to finally let loose and be himself.

All in all, an intriguing start to a new series.

  1. I skipped this one but did read book one. I liked it well enough but didn't love it. It's an interesting set up just didn't quite snag me.
