Author Showcase: Natalie Dae

Today, I've got the lovely Natalie Dae on the bloggity for an Author Showcase. Dear Natalie is very shy and has decided she's like to do this interview style, so whatever makes her happy, eh? Please give Natalie a lovely warm welcome and feel free to grill her with more questions.

Natalie's a fantastic writer and one of my very first forays into erotic romance was her book, Her Beautiful Wench. Boy, did that book reel me in. She's just re-released it too, so I think it's time for a re-read for me. :-)

Oh, and she's also offering a few of her books to giveaway as well. You get five (5) electronic copies of a selection of her books in either PDF or EPUB format. All you need do is leave a comment below. Go the end end of this post to see which books she is giving away.

Synopsis

The Coterie is a group of vampires who wish to do good under the direction of Cormag, an ancient Scottish vamp. When their existence is threatened, Cormag will do anything to protect his kind—including culling the evil. Meet the main players—Cormag, Anstace, Lincoln and Emily. Together they make a formidable team.

Emily had no idea she would grow from a mild-mannered woman into a kick-ass vamp. No one, no one threatens her man…

Dashed into the sea during a storm, Emily is rescued by a long-haired man who immediately intrigues her. He’s…mesmerising. Sexy. Beautiful. He takes her to his home, a lighthouse on a cliff top, where her attraction to him grows. She can’t fight it, even when she realises what he is—a vampire. He offers her immortality but ensures she knows exactly what she’s letting herself in for—forever with him, as well as hot and satisfying sex…

Emily becomes his attendant, the woman destined to spend eternity with the vampire Lincoln, sharing her blood, her life, and her body. He adores her, would do anything for her, but an earlier vow not to embrace the vampire lifestyle and The Coterie’s demands leaves him sorely tested when an old adversary kidnaps Emily, bringing Lincoln’s painful past hurtling back.

Excerpt

The roaring thunder reminded Emily of a night not so long ago, when the waves had crashed upon the rocks below the lighthouse, slapping the cliff edge and spewing into the sky. Hundreds of droplets had hung suspended for a moment, tinted white by the shaft of light streaming from the windows, the pitch sky a vast background littered with a million tiny stars.
She gazed out of the window now at a similar scene, her stomach in knots. Lincoln was out there, battling the waves, trying to reach the stranded sailor who had radioed in seconds before his boat capsized. A swatch of illumination from the lighthouse beacon flashed across the angry sea, showing the hideous choppy waves and foamy spume ridges. Emily hated times like this, her nerves strung taut, ready to snap if news came that Lincoln hadn’t made it. And she would feel it if he didn’t.
She lifted her fingers to her mouth as a flash of lightning staggered across the horizon. The streak of light vanished, and she studied her image in the glass, a haunted woman, black hair wild, eyes wide in a white face pinched by terror. Another growl of thunder brought the sensation of goosebumps to her arms and she covered her ears, a tangible rumble humming through the floor and up into her body. Closing her eyes, she fought to combat her nerves, telling herself Lincoln would come home. Home to hold her in his arms and whisper everything was all right. Home to carry her to bed and make sweet love to her until the sun stuck its orange scalp over the horizon and chased the bad weather away.
Emily’s gums ached, her teeth elongating as her belly spasmed for a different reason. Hunger gripped her, the need for liquid sustenance strong, leaving her arms and legs weak. Lincoln had to return soon or she would be forced out into the bad weather—or worse, to feed from old Ray, the mortal who lived in the apartment below theirs. He would be sleeping, oblivious to the storm, oblivious to her creeping into his room to pierce his neck and suckle. Normally, she and Lincoln shared blood, almost like a ritual, something vampires just did, but it could become a bad habit if they allowed the need for blood to rule them.
No. I mustn’t think about feeding from others. Lincoln will come back. He will.

Author interview

I'm delighted to have Natalie join me to anwer a few questions for the blog. Please give her a very warm welcome ...

Thank you for having me here today!

Where are you from?

I’m from the UK. I’ve spent most of my life living near Oxford but recently moved farther north. Life in the south is expensive, and people are always in a rush. It really was like the rat race, and I needed something a little slower. Where I live now is perfect.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

It took a long time after I was published to see myself as an author. For years I was just me, this woman who had five kids and a husband, and I happened to dabble in the written word. When I saw my books available online, and more recently in the bricks-and-mortar shops, I stared at them as though there had been some mistake—or that I was dreaming this whole thing and I’d wake up.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I used to love reading books about WW2 in my twenties. I read so many of them and found them so enjoyable that I thought I’d have a go at one myself. When I look back at it now, it was absolutely awful, mainly because I hadn’t learned the craft—back then I didn’t even know writing was a craft! I just thought you wrote what you wanted and someone fixed it for you. How wrong I had been.

What books have influenced your life most?

I suppose I could say the WW2 ones—they inspired me to be where I am today. Plus, because they are set in the war with rations, the ‘all pulling together in times of crisis’ aspect, and the camaraderie—they’ve shaped how I behave.

Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

Without question, my boss.

Do you see writing as a career?

Not for me personally, no. My career is my day job. Writing is my pleasure time, the thing that de-stresses me. The thing I will continue doing just because not writing makes me grumpy.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Stephen King and his ability to write a lot of words about nothing but still make them interesting. For me, he is a ‘slow’ writer, where everything unfolds at a languid pace and not a thing will be written until he’s good and ready to tell you. He can make you want to read those slow passages in case you miss something significant—normally, with anyone else, I admit I’ll skip those types of paragraphs. I’m guilty of writing them myself (sorry!). But like I said, I can’t skip his slow parts, and I think that’s a skill he has, to keep you hooked when with other authors you wouldn’t be. He’s a master storyteller, in my opinion.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

No. Travel isn’t on my to-do list. I’m a hermit.

Who designed the covers?

I did. LOL.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

If only one person reads my book, I’m happy. I don’t crave fame or money—many people won’t believe that, but hey, that’s their prerogative. I just want someone, somewhere, to read my words after each book releases. And if someone learns something from it, or it made them think, or they understood it—me, and what I was trying to do—then that’s a massive bonus.

Thank you Natalie for the insight into you as a writer. Loved all the answers!!

Author Info

jsI’ve had a few pen names in my time, but the main ones I write under are Natalie Dae (mainly BDSM M/F) and Sarah Masters (usually angsty M/M—stories that deal with the harsh realities of life instead of sweeping them under the carpet while at the same time having a happy ending/hope for the future). I also write as Geraldine O’Hara, although her books are mainly light-hearted comedy and I have to be in the right frame of mind to write those—hence why there aren’t many titles haha! I also write as one half of Harlem Dae with my brilliant BFF Lily Harlem.

In 2016 I plan to only write books that won’t stop yabbering to me in my head. In the past I’ve written to order, or for deadlines—I could have said no but didn’t!—and when I handed in my last deadline book in 2015, the relief was immense. I don’t do well with deadlines—they tend to squash my creativity—so 2016 is definitely going to be The Year of Freedom, where I write what I want, when I want. I’m looking forward to seeing where that takes me.

I’ve recently revamped five books, and they have been released as Special Editions. They were originally written a few years ago, so it was a good chance to re-edit—and also to see how much I’ve grown in the craft. I fixed a few things in each book, little things like matching it to my style today or deleting phrases that I wouldn’t use now. Hopefully, they’ll now have a new lease of life. My favourites of the five are Shadow and Darkness and Lincoln’s Woman. Here are excerpts for both.
