Synopsis

To win a lord, you can’t be a lady…

Darcy Blake, Earl of Chase, is a soldier, rogue, and a loyal King's man. Commanded to spy on the luscious actress Amelia Fox, Darcy must pretend to be her student for a court theatrical. He is certain he can school her in the art of seduction while discovering if she is a traitor. But to his shock, he finds Mrs. Fox teaching him an entirely different kind of lesson.

As London's most popular actress, Amelia is famous at court, and she doesn't have a husband to tell her what do. Unfortunately, the king has ordered her to train the rakehell, Lord Chase to act for the court. Before long, the Earl is driving her wild with desire and awakening her heart to love. As an actress, society dictates she can never be more than Lord Chase's mistress, and Amelia has vowed never to be less than a lady.

When Darcy learns the witty actress is indeed linked to a traitor, he'll have to decide if love or loyalty will rule the day.

Excerpt

“I wish for us to maintain a purely professional relationship.”
He pulled at the tie of his cloak, slowly letting the chord come undone. “That is unfortunate.”
    “Your disappointment is noted.”
The rich black fabric slid from his shoulders, and he swept it over his arm. “Mrs. Fox, I am delighted to be your student and shall devote myself to you for hours on end.”
“Your devotion is also noted,” she said dryly. “Would you care to air any other feelings before we work, my lord?”
“Only that I am completely at your disposal,” his lips curled wolfishly.
Slowly, she sauntered towards him, pinning him with a warning glare. “You shall maintain a professional attitude or I shall make certain that when next you sing, it is an octave higher than before.”
Deep, rolling laughter burst from his lips and it was a delightful, shiver inducing sound. “Hold madam, hold.” He dropped his hat and cloak upon a nearby chair, then turned fully to face her. He crossed his arms over his broad chest, and the rich green fabric strained slightly against his muscles. “That is, indeed, a serious threat.” He glanced down at her through hooded lashes. “I do believe you mean it.”
Amelia stared at him for just a moment longer then she should before she wrenched her gaze away. “I do.” She stepped back and cleared her throat. “Now, shall we to our lesson?”
He hesitated, his brows drawing together questioningly. “You do not wish to discuss last night at all?” He unfolded his arms and drew off his gloves. “I had a quite a pleasing time.”
“My lord, though I found you amusing and enjoyed your company, given the circumstances, I have chosen to put last evening’s events from my mind. I suggest you do the same.”
He dropped his black gloves by his hat and cloak, as if deliberately prolonging the silence. The air crackled with tension and Amelia took in several shallow breaths, her corset feeling unusually tight.
And then, very softly, he whispered, “I think not.”

And as a special treat, we have author Eva Devon in a short interview with Mrs Fox.

A Conversation with Mrs. Fox

Eva: So, Mrs. Fox, since you’ve become one of the first ever women actresses on the London stage, what’s it like being a female in a man’s world?

Mrs. Fox: Tricky. Everyone does like to pinch! Still, I adore going on stage every night and my dear friend Ned Kyanaston has helped me learn how to fend off all the bad boys behind the curtain.

Eva: I hear you’ve no interest in becoming a mistress. Why? Isn’t that lucrative?

Mrs. Fox: Of course, it’s lucrative! But I want to be known for my work, not my patrons. So, my skirts stay down and I’m hired because I’m talented. No naughty business for me.

Eva: I’ve heard Lord Blake is rather attractive and extremely tempting. Is it true?

Mrs. Fox: I have absolutely nothing to say about him.

Eva: You sound a bit defensive.

(silence)

Mrs. Fox: He’s handsome and has several talents.

Eva: Like?

Mrs. Fox: Never you mind. I say, is it warm in here?

Eva: No.

Mrs. Fox: Oh. Must be my gown then. What was I saying?”

Eva: You were going to list Lord Blake’s talents.

Mrs. Fox (clears throat): Oh. Well. Very good with a sword. I mean. He’s skilled with a blade.

Eva: Really?

Mrs. Fox: Oh yes. But beyond that I know nothing. Now, I must be going, I’m due on stage.

Eva: Thank you for the quick meeting.

Mrs. Fox: Always a pleasure to speak with my author. (Pause)  I don’t suppose you could write in a rather ugly characteristic or something deeply unpleasant for Lord Blake, could you? Would help me immensely in avoiding temptations.

Eva: No. Sorry. He’s a handsome devil.

Mrs. Fox: (sighs) Devil indeed. . . .

... what fun! I loved that interview. Looks like Lord Blake is getting under Mrs Fox's collar. :-)

Author Info

jsUSATODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR, Eva Devon, was raised on literary fiction, but quite accidentally and thankfully, she was introduced to romance one Christmas by Johanna Lindsey's Mallory novella, The Present. A romance addict was born. She devoured every single Lindsey novel within a few months and moved on to contemporary and paranormal with gusto. Now, she loves to write her own roguish dukes, alpha males and the heroines who tame them.
