From bestselling author Kate Douglas comes the first book in a sensational new series set in California wine country-a place where love is always intoxicating. . .

They call her Kaz. She's a gorgeous model with a good head for business-until now, at least. Kaz has just been fired from her latest photo shoot for having the wrong tattoo in the wrong place at the wrong time. But a chance encounter with photographer Jake Lowell could make everything right again...if Kaz is willing to accept his proposition. What does she have to lose?

Jake has been searching for the perfect model to pose for a body-jewelry shoot-one that will leave no room for modesty. Is Kaz, who is nothing if not professional, ready to bare it all for a man she is not sure she can trust? It's an offer that's too good to refuse...and as Kaz finds herself growing more comfortable with Jake, the attraction between them reaches arousing new heights. But while the artist and his subject learn more about each other in the intimacy of wine country, evil lurks in the shadows-and soon it becomes clear that someone else has designs on them...

“Jacob Lowell, RJ Photography.”  He shot a quick glance at the wall of photos. “I’m looking for a model with a particular quality. I’ve been to a few other agencies, but no luck. I’m not sure if you can help me or not.”

She smiled broadly and spread her hands. “I won’t know until you tell me exactly what you’re looking for. Man? Woman? Hands, feet, face, whole body or other body part? Particular style? What do you need?”

He let out a frustrated breath. He’d been describing the look he wanted for over a week, now, and it hadn’t gotten him anywhere. He gave it another shot.

“Not the traditional look,” he said. “I’ve got a client who wants edgy, someone sort of dark and mysterious. Female, not necessarily traditionally beautiful, but someone unique, eye catching. Piercings are important. Ears, nostril maybe, or cheek. Eyebrow.” He shrugged. “The usual spots for those who do piercings. I want, you know, a sense of danger. I...” He shook his head. At least this receptionist wasn’t laughing at him.  “It’s hard to explain. I’ll know her when I see her.”

An office door flew open. Then it shut just as loudly as a tall, absolutely stunning young woman slammed it behind her.

The receptionist spun around in her chair. “Kaz? Are you okay? What happened?” She glanced at Jake and then focused on the woman.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the model, because that’s what she had to be. No woman this tall, this beautiful could be anything but a high end model.

“The sonofabitch fired me,” Kaz said, ignoring Jake standing there, staring at her. “He’s got a major issue with tattoos.” Her laugh was harsh and angry. “To make matters worse, I forgot to take the fucking stud out of my nose. The general was not pleased, to put it mildly.” Then she sighed, leaned over and grabbed her tote bag. “The Smithum people dropped me and the agency because of my tat. A tat on my belly they wouldn’t even have seen if not for a pervert employee checking me out in the dressing room. They’re doing a freaking shoe ad! My belly’s not even in the shoot.”

She stopped, finally appeared to notice that Jake was standing here. “I’m sorry. Bad day.” She gave him an apologetic smile, then focused on the receptionist. Her shoulders slumped.

“My locker’s already empty.” She held up the bag. “Guess it’s a good thing I’d already planned to clean it out today. I’ll see you back at the house, okay?”

“Oh, Kaz. I’m sorry, hon. There are other agencies, and they don’t have Top End’s stupid rules. As popular as you are…” She glanced at Jake, but he was more interested in the model than anything the receptionist had been saying. “I’ll come home as soon as I can.”

Kaz merely nodded, but she flashed another quick smile at Jake, said, “I really am sorry. That was totally unprofessional of me.” Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she added, “It’s been one of those days,” and headed for the door without waiting for an answer.

Jake stared at the slowly closing door, fully aware he was actually aroused. The thrill of the hunt? Hell, he didn’t know, but she was beautiful, she was edgy, and she was exactly who he was looking for. He turned to the receptionist. “Tat? What kind of tat’s she got?”

Author Info

jsSome people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.

Many submissions and rejections followed.

In 1998, she published with a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.

In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. Kate has continued on as the imprint's lead author, with twenty-one novels and novellas in the full Wolf Tales series. She also has a series with Kensington's Zebra imprint, DemonSlayers, and has just completed her latest Aphrodisia series, Dream Catchers, which opened with the NightShift anthology and her novella, Dream Catcher, followed by the novels Dream Bound and Dream Unchained.

Her next series, Spirit Wild, debuts April 30, 2013 with Dark Wolf. This is a spin-off series that takes place in the Chanku world readers first met in Wolf Tales. Characters are the grown children of the first Chanku.

Kate and her husband of over forty years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.
