About the movie

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend". However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to "leave no one behind." But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

Review

I am not one to review movies because I don't watch that many of them. If we're lucky, Steve and I might watch one or 2 movies a year but we're making an effort to watch more movies since there are so many great ones out there.

Lately, I have become more attracted to watching movies that reflect the lives of real people. We recently watched The Imitation Game about the life of Alan Turing and his contributions to the war and The Theory of Everything about the life of Stephen Hawking. Both wonderful movies. Our latest addition to that list is American Sniper.

I knew going into this movie that it was going to be intense but even knowing that, the intensity of it took me completely by surprise.

I have a great admiration for the people who serve in the armed forces, who sacrifice their lives so that we can continue to have the lives that we live today. This movie cements it for me through the sacrifice of this one man, Chris Kyle.

I'm a big fan of violent movies, the larger the explosions, the better. I love my guns and explosions but this movie takes it to a whole different level because the realism it portrays and it is the life of a man who was real, not made believe.

I read romantic suspense all the time (had to bring in a little bit of the romance spin!) and I love my Navy SEALs, Marines, etc. Chris Kyle is a Navy SEAL but he is also the epitome of those men that I read about in my romances. He's dedicated, he's loyal, he's tough and he's patriotic. He believes in what he is doing, that's he's keeping the people safe by going to war and by killing the enemy in Iraq, he prevents them from going across the ocean to harm the people and the country he loves.

Chris Kyle's story is an amazing one not just because he is a hero and he had however many kills that were recorded during his 4 tours in the Iraq War but also because he is a man with a family and a life he left behind. He is a man who had to learn how to live after the war and his service to hsi country. He gave his time and his life even after he left the SEALs to serving those who needed him and his experience, to helping make the lives of other veterans better.

This movie killed me. It traumatized me with its realism, it broke my heart with Chris Kyle's death and it brought me to tears when his fellow Navy SEALs hammered their badges into his coffin.

It's a raw and gritty movie. Be prepared to have your heart catch in your throat multiple times as you watch it. Then, at the end of it, appreciate and honor the man who gave so much of his life to make our lives safer.

So to Chris Kyle and his legacy, and to all the men and women who serve, I thank you for your service.

Go watch the movie. It will change you.

About Chris Kyle

eljChristopher Scott "Chris" Kyle (April 8, 1974 − February 2, 2013) was a United States Navy SEAL and the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with 160 confirmed kills. Kyle served four tours in the Iraq War and was awarded several commendations for acts of heroism and meritorious service in combat. He received two Silver Star Medals, five Bronze Star Medals, one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals[7] and numerous other unit and personal awards.[8]

Kyle was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 2009 and wrote a bestselling autobiography, American Sniper, which was published in January 2012. A film adaptation of Kyle's autobiography, directed by Clint Eastwood, was released in December 2014. On February 2, 2013, Kyle was shot and killed at a shooting range near Chalk Mountain, Texas, with his friend, Chad Littlefield. The man accused of killing them, Eddie Ray Routh, was found guilty of both murders and later sentenced to life in prison without parole.
